Do Security Cameras Deter Crime? Protect Your Home On Vacation

You'd be surprised by how many families have returned home from a long vacation only to find that their house has been broken into. Thankfully, there are ways for you to avoid horror stories like this.

Over the past few years, more homeowners have chosen to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to protecting their homes from crime while they're away by investing in security deterrents.

Some of the best deterrent methods we recommend include:

  • Installing doorbell cameras
  • Using outside motion lights
  • Setting indoor light timers
  • Posting security signs

In this blog, we'll take a closer look at these methods and how they work to deter thieves from targeting your home while you're on vacation.

Theft Deterrent #1: Doorbell cameras

If you want peace of mind while you're on vacation, installing a doorbell camera is a great place to start. Doorbell cameras have become one of the more commonly used security systems among homeowners today.

These cameras are subtle and effective deterrents because they allow you to see who's at your front door through the camera mounted in your doorbell. Doorbell cameras will also alert you when there's motion at your front door, which makes it easy to pick up on suspicious activity.

Because these cameras make it so easy for you to monitor your home from anywhere, a (smart) burglar will most likely stay away if they notice you have a doorbell camera installed.

Theft Deterrent #2: Outdoor motion lights

Outdoor motion lights are a great way to protect your home when you're on vacation because they will alert your neighbors and anyone else nearby of activity around your home.

Typically, burglars prefer to operate in the dark to avoid drawing too much attention. With outside motion lights, you can literally put the spotlight on thieves before they get too close to your home.

In addition to drawing attention to any activity happening outside of your home, motion lights also indicate that there may be a security system installed inside the home.

Usually, if a burglar sees an outdoor motion light, it could be enough to deter them from breaking in.

Theft Deterrent #3: Indoor light timers

One of the best ways to keep burglars at bay while you're on vacation is to make it seem like someone is always home. An easy (and affordable) way to do this is to put some of your indoor lights on a timer.

Burglars usually look for patterns and set schedules. So, you should occasionally set the timers to come on at random times, that way burglars won't be able to pinpoint exactly when you're home and when you're away.

Theft Deterrent #4: Security signs

Strategically posting security signs and stickers throughout your property is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to deter burglars while you're away.

If you have a security system installed, we would suggest placing signs and/or stickers close to (or on) entrance/access points such as:

  • Your front yard
  • Next to your driveway
  • Your back door
  • Windows (floor level)

You should ensure that all signs/stickers are visible and indicate that your home is under 24/7 surveillance. It also helps if the name of the security company is on the sign/sticker.

Posting security signs and stickers has proven to be a very effective deterrent against burglars and break-ins. The more you advertise that your home is protected, the better.
